“r12 is coming!”
You’ve probably heard or seen things around heralding the news that r12 is coming and, no doubt, you have some questions. We hope these few web pages assist with some answers.
We hope you’ll embrace the 6 weeks of r12 with conviction and passion. More than just a good program, our hope and prayer would be that through it you see Jesus in a fresh and powerful light, and that you recommit yourself to follow him with a fully devoted heart.
What is r12?
r12 is a relational profile of an authentic disciple, based on Romans 12. r12 is not about being religious, keeping rules, developing programs, church growth, self-actualization, or spiritual formulas for success. It’s about taking inventory of our relationships and helping us find Biblical answers to five of the most important questions in life:
Why is r12 Relevant?
MOST PEOPLE WANT TO GROW, BUT DON’T KNOW HOW. Christians search for the answers, but when they don’t know where they are going, they often start in the wrong direction. Meeting people right where they are with clear direction for becoming disciples of Jesus Christ is the most significant thing our church can do.
But this begs the question, “If we are to make disciples, what does one look like, and how will we know when we’ve made one?”
Why is r12 Unique?
It’s a matter of emphasis. In all our material, we focus on…
- Expositional teaching, not topical
- Relationships – not religious activities
- Receiving God’s grace, not trying harder
What will the church be doing during r12?
Each of the six weeks will focus on one of the key aspect of a disciple spelled out in Romans 12. Through sermons, daily devotional readings, small groups, personal bible reading, and taking spiritual assessment of our lives, we’ll begin the journey to follow Jesus by aligning our lives to the way He lived. We’ll start to become fully devoted followers of Him. Here are how the elements break down:
Sermons: After an introduction/overview sermon on Oct. 10, each of the remaining weeks will look at an Old Testament figure. We’ll look at how Abraham, Daniel, Moses, David & Jonathan, and Joseph modeled Romans 12 principles.
Daily Devotional: We will make available to everyone the book, “Living on the Edge,” to read through the 6 week campaign. This book will help us increase in knowledge of how to apply the r12 truths and principles into our lives.
Small Groups: Meeting during the week, we hope that every adult joins a small group. These groups will watch a DVD at each lesson that explores and explains the 5 elements of a r12 disciple by taking us deep into Romans chapter 12. Then, lead by a small group host, discussion will help people understand how to live these out in their lives. The groups will focus on understanding, encouragement and relationally connecting.
Service: Near the end of the campaign, we’ll respond by serving those less fortunate in our community. As a church we’ll reach out to those with significant need, and apply what it means to be serving disciples.
What can I do in the days leading up to the r12?
Pray! More than a 6 week campaign we see this as an important start for our church. We want to become very intentional about growing to be fully devoted followers of Jesus. Also pray for our small group leaders, Frank and his sermons, and those serving to make r12 a success.
Join a Small Group. This is where the power of the campaign will really be felt. No significant spiritual formation takes place outside a community! (read that again!) We need others who we can learn from: to encourage us, and, when necessary, hold us accountable. This only happens in a committed biblical community.
